Modernization & Migration

Aging automation infrastructures can present a number of problems to any organization. Spare parts can become more difficult to find and are often very expensive. Aging equipment can pose security risks or may lack modern capabilities hindering a team from taking full advantage of their infrastructure especially as it relates to data capabilities in more modern platforms. Although the drawbacks of an aging infrastructure are known, the modernization process can often feel overwhelming especially in a regulated environment.

Panacea has crafted a set of dedicated legacy install base modernization services to evaluate, prioritize, plan, and execute modernization plans designed around a client’s unique legacy landscape. Utilizing these services, we have executed migration projects ranging from single controller and HMI projects to a multi-year modernization plan touching 50+ controllers, 70+ HMIs, and dozens of connected servers and data platforms all under change control using a GAMP 5 risk-based approach.

We can also utilize different aspects of our process for standalone engagements such as evaluating a legacy install base and presenting risks, or just the creation of a validation master plan for modernization. Regardless of where you are in your modernization journey, contact us to get connected to our modernization team.

Panacea's Modernization Process

  1. Meet with stakeholders to understand the desired end state and motivations for pursuing modernization
  2. Perform a Legacy Install Base Evaluation and create a report that contains an architecture based view on the automation install base, equipment legacy status, critical supply chain and security risks, and preliminary modernization priorities
  3. Meet with stakeholders to present preliminary report and gather information from stakeholders and users on manufacturing schedules, upcoming planned downtime events, budget restrictions, and critical considerations
  4. Use Meetings to discuss potential feature modernizations or process improvements that can be made during the modernization process under change control
  5. Present report to stakeholders and use information gathered from meetings to finalize report with a recommended modernization schedule and priority list that draws on legacy status, manufacturing schedules, and critical considerations
  6. When necessary for Regulated environments, create a Validation Master Plan for modernization that will help guide the validation process ensuring the modernized/migrated systems remain in a validated state
  7. Execute the modernization plan taking advantage of Panacea’s standard Project Management framework utilizing issues lists, weekly and monthly reports, earned value systems, etc.
